Checking out my appearance in the mirror, I gave myself a nod of approval, pleased with the woman I saw staring back in the mirror. It was still me, but there was a fire and determination burning in my eyes and filling my body that I’d never felt before.

Today was the day I’d truly begin my mission. Finally, I could lose myself to the grind it would take from me in order to put up enough points to snag a top spot in my sector by the end of this year. Pushing my body past the point of exhaustion, focusing on my target and pushing past my limits was my favorite part of long combat sessions, and I couldn’t wait to get started. It was my safe place, and I was glad to have it here, even amidst my enemies.

Empty moments where I was left with nothing to ground me led to dangerous territory where I became lost in my thoughts and memories. If I had to say where I was at in terms of the five stages of grief, I’d say I was stuck somewhere between denial and anger, and that was precisely where I needed to stay. On another, more logical level, I knew I was punishing myself by staying in this mental state. I was finding temporary distractions that reduced my emotional pain in the short-term but provided very little in the way of actual healing.

For now, the distractions were more than welcome. Between the two of them, I had a feeling I wouldn’t have a dull moment during the duration of my stay at the academy.

Wanting to snag some blood before the cafeteria filled entirely with students, I quickly zipped down and grabbed two bags. Draining them quickly and tossing them in the trash, I realized I hadn’t flinched at all drinking them. I couldn’t tell if I was growing numb to my new life, or if I was slowly accepting it. I supposed it didn’t really matter which it was as long as I was able to provide my body the sustenance it needed to help me train relentlessly.

Hearing voices from a level above and steadfastly hanging onto the fact that I simply did not want to run into anyone this morning, I scrambled out of the building. I enjoyed the feel of the brisk breeze blowing around me as I walked toward the secondary building in our territory. Knowing I was early for combat class, I hoped I would have the room to myself to do some stretching and warm-ups. I wasn’t sure what this first day would bring, but I was going to make sure I did everything in my power to ensure I was prepared for it.
